Washington County (population 23,000) is nestled in
the foothills of the Ozarks, a county with land area totaling 488,000
acres. That land area includes 90,000 acres of National Forest and
numerous caves, streams, and bluffs.
Visitors to Potosi/Washington County will find an abundance of things to
see and do. There are numerous historic sites to visit. Potosi is a
historic town that was settled in the eighteenth century by French
miners. These French settlers left behind many homes, buildings, and
cemeteries that survive today. There are many trails to hike. Some of
the most challenging hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails in the
state pass through the County. These trails include Berryman Trail, the
Ozarks Trail, Trace Creek Trail, and Moses Austin Trail. And, there are
lots of friendly antique/craft stores to shop in.
